      • PFD: Type V rescue vest with quick-release belt for your leash. Standard SUP PFDs won\u2019t cut it.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Quick-release leash: Goes on your waist belt, NOT your ankle. Ankle leash in moving water = foot entrapment death trap. Must release under load<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n

        1. River reading: Identify eddies, eddy lines, waves, holes, strainers, pour-overs. If you can\u2019t see the hazards, you can\u2019t avoid them<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        2. Bracing<\/em>: Low brace and high brace to avoid falling. Your paddle is your third leg.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        3. Stance switching: Surf stance with feet offset, knees bent, looking downstream. Switch stance fast to face obstacles.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        4. Falling safely: Fall flat to the side, away from the board. Never fall standing up \u2014 foot entrapment risk. Keep feet up and pointed downstream if you swim.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        5. Self-rescue: Flip your board, climb back on in moving water. Swim aggressively to eddies.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        6. Ferrying & peel-outs: Use the current to move laterally across the river and to enter\/exit eddies<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          Strainers: Trees\/branches that let water through but not you.\u00a0Rule: Never go where you can\u2019t see the exit.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Foot entrapment: Foot gets stuck between rocks, current pushes you down.\u00a0Rule: Never stand up in moving water if you fall. Swim defensive.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Leash entanglement: Wrong leash can drown you.\u00a0Rule: Quick-release on waist only.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
